From the manufacturer:
Host Defense is built on Paul Stamets’ visionary research into the power and potential of mushrooms, especially mushroom mycelium, the root-like structures found growing below ground. The power of Host Defense comes from the discovery that the mycelium is the immune system of the mushroom.
Just as mycelium helps to support the immune system of humans, it also supports the health and immunity of the natural habitats where it grows. Mushroom mycelium is a cellular bridge connecting bees, trees, bears, plants and humans to the ecosystems in which they live. Our work is to build a healthier world with the power of mushrooms.
Host Defense Lion’s Mane Capsules use activated, freeze-dried, certified-organic mycelium, with a full spectrum of constituents: polysaccharides (beta glucans, arabinoxylane, glucose, galactose and mannose), glycoproteins, ergosterols, triterpenoids and other myco-nutrients, which are essential for supporting natural immunity.

Lion's Mane Folklore: A food staple for 100's of years in Japanese and Chinese culture, the Lion's Mane mushroom benefits were legendary. Historically reserved only for royalty, its tender white flesh tastes similar to seafood and compliments many different types of cuisine. In North America, native Indian tribes used it as an antihemorrhagic agent to stop bleeding, applying it to the wound in dried and pulverized form.
For The Brain And Nervous System: Also known as the 'Smart Mushroom', Lion's Mane has garnered an excellent reputation for brain and neurological health. Lion's Mane is fairly unique in its ability to increase activity of the Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), a natural compound that supports nerve repair and regeneration. It has thus demonstrated great potential to activate peripheral nerve regeneration in cases of damage or trauma. Lion's Mane also offers enhanced cognitive function and mood, and is often used to promote mental clarity, focus, and memory. In a clinical study conducted in Japan, Lion's Mane shined for its ability to improve cognitive function in a group of elderly Japanese that had been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment.
