From the manufacturer:
Host Defense is built on Paul Stamets’ visionary research into the power and potential of mushrooms, especially mushroom mycelium, the root-like structures found growing below ground. The power of Host Defense comes from the discovery that the mycelium is the immune system of the mushroom.
Just as mycelium helps to support the immune system of humans, it also supports the health and immunity of the natural habitats where it grows. Mushroom mycelium is a cellular bridge connecting bees, trees, bears, plants and humans to the ecosystems in which they live. Our work is to build a healthier world with the power of mushrooms.
Host Defense Maitake uses activated, freeze-dried, certified-organic mycelium and fruitbodies, with a full spectrum of constituents: polysaccharides (beta glucans, arabinoxylane, glucose, galactose and mannose), glycoproteins, ergosterols, triterpenoids and other myco-nutrients, which are essential for supporting natural immunity.

Maitake Folklore: At certain points in Japanese history, maitake has been worth its weight in silver. In feudal Japan, local lords are said to have paid their subjects the equivalent weight of maitake in silver. Maitake translates from its Japanese name to ‘dancing mushroom.’ If you harvest a fairly large specimen and move it around, the frond-like aerial parts can appear to be dancing. Finding a cluster of these immune boosting mushrooms also brings such elation that foragers often dance with joy.
Healthy Blood Sugar: Maitake promotes a healthy glycemic balance by supporting normal blood sugar metabolism. In animal studies, Maitake not only improved blood sugar levels but also consistently improved insulin sensitivity.
Immune Health: Maitake is a delicious, edible species, with a long history of traditional use, Maitake is known to be rich in 1-3, 1-4, and 1-6 Beta-glucans,and as such is well-known for promoting immune health.
Other mushrooms it works well with:
